What is Ayurveda?
The name Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term, made up of the words ‘ayus’ and ‘veda’. ‘Ayus' means life and ‘Veda’ means knowledge or science. The term 'Ayurveda' means the knowledge of life or the science of life. Ayu comprises the mind, body, senses and soul. Ayurveda teaches us that we are all made up of nature's five great elements, the Pancha Mahabhutas: Air, Ether, Water, Fire and Earth; and how to live in accordance to these laws of nature. This knowledge has the capacity to enable us to meet our fullest individual potential, and live with balance and more ease in our day to day lives.
In this Ayurveda Yoga Program you will experience how despite all of us being made up of all of the same elements, we each contain different amounts of each element, therefore each one of us is a unique expression of nature. Ergo, we all need an individual approach regarding foods, herbs, healing remedies, lifestyles, and yoga practices.
Ayurveda is widely regarded as one of the oldest healthcare systems in the world; it is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago. The fundamentals of Ayurveda can be found in Hindu scriptures called the Vedas (ancient books of wisdom).
The Rig Veda (a collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns counted among the four Hindu religious texts known as the Vedas) is said to be composed between roughly 1700–1100 BCE, making it one of the oldest texts which contains a series of prescriptions to help humans overcome various ailments. Ayurveda is derived from the Atharva Veda, which is sometimes described as The Fifth Veda.
The Koshas
In Ayurveda, the human body is a container for the true self (or pure consciousness); which has its seat in the center of this container. Surrounding the eternal Self is a series of sheaths, in vedic philosophy these sheaths are called "The Koshas". The Koshas, organize the various elements of the human being. These sheaths get progressively more dense as they move outward. Having an understanding of how the sheaths work can be helpful in mapping out a way to access the stillness of pure consciousness, which may be said to be the goal of yoga as whole, pranayama (breathing practices, meditation), and Ayurveda.
