A Holistic Approach to Practice,

Rooted in Ancient Wisdom & Modern Insight

Many people are surprised to learn that traditionally, there were no distinct "styles" of yoga as we know them today. What we often call styles, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, Power, or Gentle Yoga, are largely modern methods of organizing and delivering practices. In the classical traditions, yoga was understood as a holistic path of self-inquiry, transformation, and liberation.

The term Hatha is often translated as "sun" (ha) and "moon" (tha), symbolizing the union of opposites, but it can also mean "force" or "effort." Traditionally, Hatha Yoga encompassed a wide range of practices, including postures, breathwork, cleansing techniques, mudras, bandhas, and meditation, all designed to cultivate balance and prepare the practitioner for deeper states of awareness. Likewise, Vinyasa means "to place in a special way" and refers to the intentional sequencing of practices to create a specific experience or outcome.

While we honor these traditional roots, we also recognize the value of modern class styles as effective teaching frameworks. Each style offers a unique pathway into the practice and can be skillfully applied to meet different intentions, populations, energy levels, and learning objectives.

Throughout your training, you will explore a variety of class styles and methodologies, not as separate forms of yoga, but as different expressions of the same underlying principles. Understanding the purpose, benefits, energetics, and teaching applications of each approach will allow you to create meaningful, accessible, and impactful experiences for your students. The sections below introduce the styles we teach, why we use them, and how each can serve as a powerful vehicle for sharing the transformative practices of yoga.

At Virtual Prana, we offer Wellness-Based Yoga - an integrative experience where each class is intelligently designed and thematically curated. Our methodology draws from personal development principles, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, combining the physical, emotional, and energetic dimensions of yoga.

VINYASA

Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and intentional practice that links breath with movement. Derived from the Sanskrit words vi ("in a special way") and nyasa ("to place"), Vinyasa refers to the thoughtful sequencing of practices to create a specific experience or outcome. While often associated with flowing postures, Vinyasa is much more than movement alone. It is the art of creating a purposeful progression that guides students physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically.

In a Vinyasa class, postures are linked together through conscious transitions and synchronized breathing, creating a moving meditation that cultivates strength, mobility, balance, focus, and presence. Classes may range from gentle and grounding to strong and challenging, depending on the intention of the sequence. Through creative sequencing, students learn to move with awareness, connect to the rhythm of their breath, and develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between body, mind, and energy.

In our trainings, Vinyasa is taught not as a fixed sequence of poses, but as a methodology for intelligent sequencing. Students learn how to create purposeful flows, build toward peak postures, weave yoga philosophy and energetics into their classes, and design experiences that support a wide range of practitioners and intentions. Vinyasa becomes a powerful tool for transformation, allowing teachers to guide students through practices that are both physically engaging and deeply meaningful.

YIN YOGA

Yin Yoga is a deeply restorative and meditative practice that invites you to slow down, turn inward, and cultivate a profound connection with yourself. Unlike more dynamic styles of yoga that primarily target the muscles, Yin Yoga focuses on the body's deeper connective tissues, including the fascia, ligaments, tendons, and joints. Postures are held for extended periods of time, typically between 2 and 10 minutes, allowing the body to gradually release tension while creating space for greater mobility, resilience, and energetic flow.

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Meridian Theory, and the Five Element System, Yin Yoga works to stimulate the body's energetic pathways while supporting the health of the associated organs and emotional landscapes. The practice encourages stillness, mindfulness, and self-inquiry, offering an opportunity to observe thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgment. Yin Yoga can be both physically and emotionally transformative, creating space for healing, balance, and restoration while supporting nervous system regulation and overall well-being.

GENTLE YOGA

Gentle Yoga is a nurturing and accessible practice designed to support the body, calm the mind, and regulate the nervous system. Through slow, mindful movement, conscious breathing, and supportive postures, students are invited to move with awareness rather than force, creating a practice that feels both nourishing and empowering.

Classes typically include gentle stretching, foundational strengthening, breath awareness, and relaxation techniques that help release physical tension while cultivating mental clarity and inner calm. Suitable for all levels, including beginners, those returning to movement, individuals experiencing stress, fatigue, injury recovery, or anyone seeking a more therapeutic approach to yoga, Gentle Yoga provides a welcoming environment to reconnect with yourself. This practice emphasizes presence over performance, encouraging students to listen to their bodies, honor their needs, and discover the healing power of mindful movement.

HATHA YOGA

Hatha Yoga offers a balanced and well-rounded practice that integrates strength, flexibility, breath awareness, and mindful movement. Traditionally, the word Hatha can be translated as "sun" and "moon," representing the harmonization of opposing energies, and can also be interpreted as "force" or "effort." Historically, Hatha Yoga was a comprehensive system of practices designed to prepare the body, mind, and energy system for meditation and higher states of awareness.

In a modern class setting, Hatha Yoga is typically practiced at a moderate pace, allowing students the time and space to explore postures with intention, alignment, and awareness. Classes often include breathwork, mindful warm-ups, standing and seated postures, balance work, strengthening sequences, stretching, and relaxation. By balancing effort with ease, Hatha Yoga helps cultivate physical resilience, mental focus, emotional balance, and a deeper connection to the present moment. Suitable for practitioners of all levels, this practice provides a strong foundation for developing a sustainable and lifelong yoga practice.

AYURVEDA YOGA

Ayurveda Yoga combines the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, India's traditional system of holistic health, with the transformative practices of yoga. Recognizing that each individual has a unique constitution, or dosha, Ayurveda Yoga seeks to create balance by tailoring practices to support the body's natural rhythms, energetic tendencies, and changing seasonal influences.

Classes may be offered in Hatha, Gentle, or Vinyasa formats and are thoughtfully designed to address the qualities of the doshas known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Through specific combinations of movement, breathwork, meditation, and mindfulness practices, students learn how to cultivate greater balance physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically. Depending on the season and the needs of the practitioner, classes may focus on grounding excess energy, cooling intensity, building vitality, or creating stability. Ayurveda Yoga offers a practical and empowering approach to self-care, helping students deepen their understanding of themselves while supporting overall health, vitality, and well-being.

PRANA POWER YOGA

Prana Power Yoga is an energizing and intelligently designed flow practice that blends traditional yoga, modern movement science, mindfulness, and the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Created to strengthen both body and mind, these dynamic all-levels classes invite students to move with purpose while cultivating greater awareness of their physical, emotional, and energetic health.

Each class begins with a grounding presencing practice designed to connect students to their breath, body, and intention. From there, students move through an energizing warm-up, strength-building sequences, balance challenges, mobility work, and deep stretching, all thoughtfully woven together to create a complete and transformative experience. Set to an uplifting playlist, Prana Power Yoga balances effort and ease, challenge and restoration, creating a practice that is both empowering and accessible.

What makes Prana Power Yoga unique is its integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, organ anatomy, meridian theory, and emotional intelligence. Each class is intentionally themed around a specific organ system, energetic pathway, emotional quality, or seasonal element, allowing students to explore the interconnected relationship between physical health, emotional well-being, and energetic balance. More than simply a workout, Prana Power Yoga is an opportunity to cultivate resilience, self-awareness, vitality, and a deeper connection to the wisdom of your body.

TRAUMA-AWARE YOGA

Trauma-Aware Yoga is a compassionate, evidence-informed approach to practice that recognizes the profound impact life experiences can have on the body, mind, nervous system, and sense of self. Rather than focusing on achieving specific postures, this approach prioritizes safety, choice, empowerment, and self-awareness, creating an environment where students can reconnect with their bodies in a way that feels supportive and accessible.

Grounded in trauma theory, nervous system education, mindfulness, and somatic awareness, Trauma-Aware Yoga recognizes that experiences of stress, adversity, loss, grief, chronic overwhelm, and trauma can influence how individuals experience movement, breath, sensation, and connection. Classes are intentionally designed to foster agency and autonomy through invitational language, adaptable practices, predictable sequencing, and opportunities for choice. Students are encouraged to explore their experience without judgment and to honor their unique needs moment by moment.

Practices may include gentle movement, breath awareness, grounding techniques, mindfulness, meditation, nervous system regulation tools, and opportunities for reflection. The focus is not on performance or perfection, but on cultivating a greater sense of presence, resilience, self-trust, and connection. Trauma-Aware Yoga can support emotional well-being, stress reduction, nervous system regulation, and the development of greater body awareness while helping students build a more compassionate relationship with themselves.

In our Trauma-Aware Yoga programs and trainings, we go beyond postures to explore the intersection of yoga, neuroscience, psychology, mindfulness, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and embodied healing practices. Students and teachers learn practical tools for creating inclusive, supportive spaces that honor the diversity of human experiences while empowering individuals to reconnect with their innate capacity for healing, growth, and transformation.
